Fluoride for Kids

Children aged 3–6 are at high risk of dental caries (tooth decay). Parents should regularly check their children’s teeth and bring them to the dentist for annual examinations. Fluoride varnish application coats the tooth surface with fluoride to protect teeth.

Strengthen teeth: Fluoride promotes remineralization of enamel to harden teeth. It also forms acid-resistant crystals on tooth surfaces to resist acid attack from bacteria and prevent cavities.
Reduce tooth sensitivity: The teeth of some young children are sensitive to cold, hot, or acidic food. Fluoride treatment can prevent dentin hypersensitivity.

3. Apply fluoride varnish evenly
4. Allow fluoride varnish to set for 1 minute

Q: What age is suitable for children to receive fluoride varnish application?
A: It is generally recommended to start fluoride treatment after children turn 3 years old.

Q: Will the fluoride wear off?
A: Yes. Fluoride varnish will gradually wear away during daily eating and tooth brushing. Therefore, reapplication is recommended every 3 to 6 months.

Q: Is it unnecessary to brush my child's teeth carefully after fluoride treatment?

A: No. You still need to thoroughly clean your child’s teeth after treatment. Remember to bring your child for regular dental check-ups and professional cleanings.

Q: Is fluoride varnish not needed if pit and fissure sealants are placed?
A: No. Pit and fissure sealants are applied on fully erupted primary and permanent molars with deep grooves to prevent pit and fissure caries. Fluoride varnish is applied to all tooth surfaces to prevent cavities on every part of the teeth. The two treatments do not conflict with each other.
