Fissure Sealants for Kids

The occlusal surface of teeth is not flat but uneven with many pits and fissures. These grooves work like millstones to thoroughly grind food. However, due to their deep crevices, pits and fissures easily trap bacteria and food debris that are hard to clean away, which may gradually lead to tooth decay. Fissure sealants form a protective barrier over the grooves, blocking bacteria and food residues from entering and preventing occlusal caries.

Ages 3-4: Primary Molar Stage
Tooth decay in primary molars not only adversely affects the development of permanent teeth and overall oral health, but also reduces children’s appetite, which may further impact their physical growth and development.

Ages 6-9: First Permanent Molar Stage

The first permanent molars (six-year molars) bear the greatest chewing force. Featuring broad occlusal surfaces, prominent cusps, and tiny, deep pits and fissures, these teeth easily trap food debris and form dental plaque, leading to dental caries. Therefore, fissure sealants should be applied immediately after eruption for early protection.

Ages 11-13: Second Permanent Molar Stage
Second permanent molars are located far back in the oral cavity and are difficult to clean thoroughly with brushing. To prevent tooth decay, sealant treatment should be performed as soon as these teeth fully erupt.
